5 Household Appliances That You Can Sell As Scrap Metal

August 31, 2022

You can sell scrap metal to earn some money. In addition, you lower your carbon footprint and contribute to environmental conservation when you recycle scrap metals.

Large machines and equipment are often the primary sources of scrap metal. However, even small household appliances can be an excellent source of scrap metal. Once an appliance becomes defective, you can contact a scrap metal dealer.

This blog post will discuss appliances you can sell as scrap metal.

1. Fridges

You can sell your old or broken-down fridge as scrap metal. Each of the fridge's parts has uses and presents environmental hazards that require proper disposal.

For example, the fridge's shelves are a good source of scrap material. In particular, aluminum shelves can fetch a good amount at the scrap metal shop. The rails that support the shelves are also prime scrap materials.

Even the thin wires at the back of the fridge can be scrap metal. You just need a wire cutter to cut the wires and a magnet to test their ferrous properties.

2. Cast Iron Stove

Cast iron stoves were a common feature in many homes. However, the stove may not be useful in the modern home. The stove is heavy and difficult to move around.

You can sell the cast iron stove to a scrap metal dealer. The payment will be substantial since cast iron stoves are some of the heaviest appliances. However, you should remove any copper or stainless steel in the stove before you sell it. These metals have a higher price than cast iron.

3. Washing Machine

Washing machines are essential and tough machines. However, these machines can break down and fail to function. For example, you may notice that your machine bounces around or is noisy. The washer may also rip your clothes or show signs of improper drainage.

You can sell a broken or old machine as scrap metal. Before you sell the machine, you need to dismantle it to separate the different metals.

4. Dishwasher

Is your dishwasher broken? Do you need to upgrade your dishwasher? You can get some extra dollars to buy a new dishwasher if you sell your dishwasher. Some of the main scrap materials in a dishwasher include:

Electric motor. The electric motor is near the lower section of the dishwasher. You will remove at least two screws to detach the motor.

Copper wires. The dishwasher has many copper wires that you can sell. All you have to do is clip the power cord and pull out the wires.

Low-grade boards. You can remove the circuit inside the dishwasher and sell it.

You should sort the materials according to the type of metal. You can also ask a professional electrician to help you.

5. Air Conditioners

Your air conditioner may have gotten you through many summers, but now you can sell it as scrap metal. You can dispose of your AC unit if the unit is very old. Alternatively, you can get rid of the unit if it increases your energy bills.

An air conditioner has many scrap materials, such as aluminum and copper. You will use a screwdriver, power drill, cable cutter, and other tools to remove the materials from the AC unit.

You should drain the liquids before you get started. You will then remove brass plugs and copper wires. The screws and side panels are great sources of scrap steel as well. Other scrap materials are the electric motor, fan, power supply, and radiators.

You can sell many different household items as scrap materials, but be advised that you will get a better bargain if you sell the items to a reputable company. Bruce Metal & Salvage is a recycling center that can buy your scrap metals. Contact us to know how we can help you.
